Women for Women International
Afghanistan Microfinance

U.S.-based Women for Women International (WWI) has been operating in Afghanistan since October 2002 - legally registered in the country as an International NGO.
In 2004, WWI made the strategic decision to introduce a microfinance program in conjunction with its Afghanistan Core Training Program. This decision was based on the success of its WWI’s Bosnia and Herzegovina’s programs offering credit products according to its solidarity group lending methodology to the graduates of its sister Core program providing post conflict women CORE training programs. WWI MFI – Afghanistan will continue to leverage this successful model and the Afghanistan microfinance experience gained since its inception of its credit program in Afghanistan. WWI MFI – Afghanistan’s reputation as a microfinance lender has strengthened its ability to offer more credit programs and broaden its market areas and targeted clients by collaborating with other NGO’s and government agencies focusing on reaching the women of Afghanistan. The beneficiaries of the program are women marginalized by decades of war and poverty, many of whom lack a formal education, employment and income generating opportunities. The Program provides direct financial and emotional support, and provides access to business lending that helps vulnerable women restart their lives in ways that are independent, productive, and secure.
